Stop 14 Location N Tours, France December 2014
Next, Flat Stanley headed across to France! He was so excited to see France since we are learning to speak French in school. While Flat Stanley was in Tours, he visited the Palais de Justice, which is like a city hall. Then he decided to head over to St. Gatien's Cathedral Church and St. Martin's Basilica, which is also a church. He thought that both of the churches were absolutely beautiful, especially the windows! Then he headed over to "Old Tours" which is the oldest part of the city to see the buildings that were build during the Medieval times. After a long day of "touring Tours", Flat Stanley found a beautiful entrance to a courtyard where he spent the rest of the day.

Stop 15 Location O Gothenburg, Sweden December 2014
Flat Stanley headed east to Gothenburg, Sweden. Gothenburg is located on the west coast on both sides of the river Gota Alv- at the bay of Kattegatt. It is the second largest city in Sweden with almost 900,000 people living there. I was founded in 1621 by King Gustav II Adolf. Flat Stanley traveled to Gustav Adolf Torg. A torg is a town square. The statue in the middle of the torg is of King Gustav II Adolf, which is how the square got it's name. This statue was placed in the torg in 1854. The buildings around the torg house the city board, the district court, the stock exchange and the town hall. There are also well houses there where the citizens of Gothenburg once had to go to get their drinking water. At Christmas time, there is always a big tree located in the square and there is a yearly trade where you can buy food and goods. Flat Stanley also visited the Alvborg Bridge, which was built in 1966 to connect the north and south parts of Gothenburg. Flat Stanley was hungry for some American food, so he and his new friend stopped off for a delicious hamburger. YUM!

Flat Stanley wanted to try authentic sushi, so he headed to Osaka, Japan. He loved it, which surprised him. Then he got a ticket and hopped on the Narita Express train to Shinagawa. Stop 17 Location Q Wellington, New Zealand December 2014
Flat Stanley headed "down under" to Wellington, New Zealand to help out on a special project. He was helping to put the finishing touches on the digital visual effects for the third Hobbit movie. It was dangerous work as he almost was flattened even more by a troll! Following his narrow escape, Flat Stanley took a cable car around to see the beautiful sights, including the Wellington Bay, before heading back to the good ol' USA.

Flat Stanley caught the acting bug when he helped with the Hobbit movie in New Zealand, so he headed to Hollywood to become a star! Hollywood is where movies and TV shows are made and you will find many people and cars... too many people and cars. Wow! It's crowded there! The next time you watch your favorite TV show,Flat Stanley says to think about all the people who work hard to make that show - writing the story, operating the camera, drawing the animation, or acting in front of the camera! Well, Flat Stanley didn't become a star, but he did get a chance to see the famous Hollywood sign while he was there. Flat Stanley also visited the old Victorian homes at Heritage Square in Los Angeles, CA. Heritage Square is a museum that collects and preserves the old homes of Los Angeles neighborhoods. Many of the fancy homes here are over 100 years old! It's a fun place to visit and imagine a time before cars, television, computers... and even electric lights! Flat Stanley had so much fun! He wants to go back to Los Angeles very soon.

Stop 21 Location U Mitchell and Mount Vernon, South Dakota December 2014
Flat Stanley headed north to South Dakota. He stopped at the Corn Palace, in Mitchell, South Dakota, and filled up on their famous Popcorn Balls. Flat Stanley thinks he may have eaten too many, as he had a bad stomach ache after eating 5 of them! Flat Stanley brought us back a sample and also sent us a special grown corn cob that a farmer in SD grows just for the Corn Palace so you can see what is all over the outside of the building. The Corn Palace is under major construction and he couldn't get a picture from the front as it is all blocked off, but he did get a picture of the inside. The outside of the Corn Palace has murals made of colored corn is changed yearly but the inside is changed every 5 to 8 years. The local college Dakota Wesleyan University and local high school Mitchell Kernels, play and practice basketball in the Corn Palace. There are concerts and other events held there as well. Stanley learned that the South Dakota State bird is the Ring-necked Pheasant and that hunters come from all over to hunt here. Flat Stanley didn't have time to drive to the Blackhills, Badlands or Mount Rushmore but those are some great places to visit in South Dakota. He hopes to travel there sometime soon.

Stop 22 Location V West Point, Virginia December 2014
Flat Stanley headed east to Virgina to visit Chief Miles and his wife on the Pamunkey Indian Reservation. Here, Flat Stanley learned many things about the Pamunkey Indians. Their tribe dates back 10,000 years or more. Their reservation is located along the shores of the Pamunkey River near King Willima County in Virgina. Flat Stanley learned that the Pamunkey Indians consumed three main food staples called "The Three Sisters", which were corn, beans and squash. They were eaten everyday with the meat that was hunted. The Pamunkey Indians lived in row houses with flat roofs. On the other side of the road, Flat Stanley found the Mattaponi Reservation. Chief Powhatan was the major chieftain of many tribes and his daughter was named Pocohantas. She was a Pamunkey. Flat Stanley brought us back a gift from the Pamunkey Reservation. He brought us a hand made drum, drum stick, flute, turtle magnet, and a dragonfly magnet. The Pamunkey Indians believe that turtles and dragonflies bring you good luck. The drum and the drum stick were made by an 85 year old Pamunkey Indian who lives on the reservation.

Stop 24 Location X Orlando, Florida January 2015
Flat Stanely joined a Second Grade Mom on a trip to Orlando to visit a special delivery. Flat Stanley was invited to meet a brand new baby named Samuel. Flat Stanley thought that Orlando was going to be such a warm place to visit in the middle of January, but he found out quickly that it was only 5 degrees warmer than Nebraska because Nebraska was experiencing a "January Thaw". He loved flying to and from Orlando because he could see the clouds during the day and the stars at night. Once in Orlando, Flat Stanley did not go to Disney World. He figured he was too small to go on any of the rides with Samuel, so instead, they headed to Lake Eola in downtown Orlando. He was able to go on a paddle boat that looked like a swan, play at the park and go to the Farmer's Market. Flat Stanley loved the big fountain there. He ate some great food. YUM! And he also visited a candy store! He didn't make it to the beach, but Flat Stanley did see a lot of palm trees while he was there.

Flat Stanley wanted to experience some "culture" so he headed west to Bentionville, Arkansas and stopped at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Here Flat Stanley spent the day seeing all kinds of art like paintings and sculptures made by American artists. He loved wondering around inside the museum taking in every detail. Flat Stanley was surprised to learn that the museum building itself was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, a very famous architect. When he was done looking around inside, Flat Stanley went outside to explore the trails and sculptures that can be found on the museum grounds. He had many favorites, including this amazing tree! Flat Stanley wants to go back again soon since the exhibits change all the time. What a special find!!!

Stop 26 and 27 Location Z and a Kenya and South Africa January 2015
Flat Stanley traveled to visit a very special friend of Christ Schools. He went to visit Ms. Chara, a missionary teacher in South Africa. He was so excited to be visiting Ms. Chara, that he sent us a very special letter. Read the letter below.
Dear Mrs. Douglass and the Second Grade Class,
I’m writing to you from South Africa! It’s a beautiful country, but that’s not the only country I visited while I was here. I got to see beautiful Kenya too. Did you know there are 54 countries that make up this continent of Africa? Africa is HUGE! You can see from this picture that you could fit the United States, China, India, and many other countries easily inside! Wow!
You may have heard some news about a disease called “Ebola” in Africa, but I wasn’t even CLOSE to where that is disease is. Don’t worry, I didn’t get sick even once!
I got to fly on a big airplane from South Africa to Kenya and back again. While in Kenya, I made a lot of friends! I made gingerbread cookies with the kids of a missionary family there, I ate lunch at a restaurant that floated in a pond, I visited a tea plantation, and my favorite, I got to pet the baby elephants at an elephant orphanage. Wow! What a trip!
The elephants at this orphanage were all rescued from the wild. Someday they will be strong enough to be released back into the bush of Africa!
Kenya was sure exciting! But I was also happy to get back to South Africa where I got to visit the school where Miss Chara works. The kids were all so excited to meet me! I even got to go out to recess with some of them.
I noticed that the boys really like to place soccer (only they call it football!). The girls like to play a game like “jacks” with rocks on the cement. All of the kids like to run and play with hula hoops and balls too! They are a lot like you at recess, I think!
Miss Chara teaches all of the kids in grade R (that’s what they call kindergarten) through grade 3. The classrooms are really full, there are 36 kids in this class of first graders! Can you find me in the middle of them all?
I learned the most of the kids speak a language called “Zulu” in their homes. There are some funny sounding “clicks” that are a part of this language. It made it hard to say some of their names! But at school, the kids must speak English, AND they are learning yet ANOTHER language called “Afrikaans.”
I can’t wait to go on my next adventure, but it was sure fun visiting Africa! God bless you all and I’ll see you soon! Oh, and Miss Chara says “Hi” too!!
Love, Flat Stanley
